Install Microsoft Windows Server 2008 through VMware

To be able to setup and configure any operating system as virtual machine (a “completely isolated guest operating system installation within a normal host operating system”[1]) you need to have software that can create a virtual environment for that operating system to run. During this tutorial i will use VMware 8 which you can install by following the guide here

Once you have VMware installed, we can begin:

Configuring your virtual machine

1. Open VMware by clicking Start->All Programs

2. Click on “VMware” then “VMware Workstation”

3. Choose File->”New Virtual Machine”

4. Choose “Typical” then click “Next”

5. This step depends on whether you have a physical DVD or an image (.iso)

a. If you have a physical DVD then select the option “Installer disc:” and choose the appropriate drive

b. If you have an iso then select the option “Installer disc image file (iso):” and browse to the location of the file

6. Enter the product key, choose the version of Windows to install, the name and password, and click Next

7. Assign a name for your virtual machine and the physical location and click Next

8. This step will allow you setting the size of the virtual machine

9. Finally you will get a summary of all the settings. If you are happy with all the configurations, click Finish

10. The virtual machine will start running automatically and setup the operating system

Congratulation you have successfully set up MS Windows Server 2008
